Pristina _ The famous American rapper, 50 Cent, was welcomed by a record crowd of fans as he played in Pristina stadium on Monday night.
Over 25,000 people, mostly young, attended the concert despite the cold and frost of a winter’s evening. The artist, whose real name is Curtis James Jackson III, is known for his worldwide hits, such as “Candy Shop”. He was the first big international star to stage a show in Pristina where locals have previously felt that celebrities bypassed the Kosovo capital on their way to giving concerts in Belgrade or Skopje. Fans from Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Montenegro joined locals to give 50 Cent a rapturous reception. Monday night’s performance came at a time when Kosovo is preparing to declare its independence from Serbia after two years of talks have failed to produce agreement on the UN-administered entity’s legal status. Concern about tension and possible violence did not deter either the artist or the big crowds that attended the show. "Kosovo is quite a safe place for people like me to come," 50 Cent said at a news conference after the show. The concert was sponsored by IPKO, Kosovo’s newly-launched second mobile phone operator. The first 25,000 people who registered as IPKO customers were given free tickets for the concerts, which were allocated within 9 hours.
