“We must reach out to the Kosovo Albanians and then expect that they do the same with the Kosovo Serbs,” has stated the president of the Liberal Democratic Party of Serbia, Cedomir Jovanovic, during an election campaign rally for the president of Serbia. He said that the truth of Kosovo is tough, but it must be said, because it is an obligation for the people that live there. “If we want Kosovo, we must reach out to the people that are in majority, and these are Albanians, so that tomorrow Serbs in Kosovo can expect the Albanians to reach out to them. We shouldn’t talk only about territories as if nobody lived there,” said Jovanovic.
Jovanovic, a former student leader of the movement that overthrew Slobodan Milosevic and a close ally of the assasinated premier Zoran Dindic, is the only high-profile politician in Serbia to have continuously stated that Kosovo has been independent since 1999 and that Serbia must accept this fact.
