Serbia urges UN Security Council debate on Kosovo PDF Print E-mail

New Kosova Report
Serbia
An official request has been lodged by Serbia for an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council on Kosovo's moves to declare independence, reports here said Wednesday.

The Balkan country's UN ambassador, Pavle Jevremovic, sought the sitting because of "dangers" associated with Kosovo's plans to make a unilateral declaration of independence, said state-run RTS and private B92 television.

In the request, which was supported by Russia's UN ambassador Vitaly Churkin, Serbia warned the independence moves, tipped to occur as early as Sunday, would be in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1244.

The UN Security Council session could be held later on Wednesday, they reported.

The resolution, coming at the end of Kosovo's 1998-1999 war, gave the disputed province "substantial autonomy" under Serbian sovereignty and put in place a UN mission and NATO-led peacekeepers.
