Bulgarian MPs from the rightist opposition tabled to Parliament a draft declaration for the recognition of independent Kosovo.

The declaration was signed by MPs from the Union of Democratic Forces, the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria, and the European Democratic Way.

It is also discussed by the Bulgarian New Democracy parliamentary group of the 17 dissenters who split off from the governing coalition in December, and have cooperated with the rightist opposition since then.

The draft declaration states that Bulgaria recognizes Kosovo's unconditional independence with guarantees for the fulfillment of the Ahtisaari Plan, the inviolability of the regional state borders, and the self-determination of the minority groups including the ethnic Bulgarians from the Gora and Zhupa areas in southern Kosovo.

The document also declares that because of its empathy with the Serbian people, Bulgaria will insists that the EU enlargement should continue as a guarantee for the ultimate stabilization of the Western Balkans.

According to the MPs who tabled the declaration, Kosovo is the concluding phase of the falling apart of former Yugoslavia, and not a precedent for secessionist programs.

"Bulgaria's present position is pointless because it says that we will recognize Kosovo but that we will wait first", said Dimitar Abadjiev from the European Democratic Way formation.

"During the last several years Kosovo has been practically governed by the international community, and therefore its secession can not be considered a legal precedent," remarked in turn Nadejda Mihaylova, MP from the Union of Democratic Forces, and former foreign minister.

This statement says it all. Kosovo is the last of the phoenix-es rising from the ashes of what was Yugoslavia...
