Poland has joined a long list of countries that intend to recognize Kosovo's sovereignty

Kosovo's February 17 decision to declare independence from Serbia provoked a wide range of reactions from the international community and even the member states of the European Union were unable to find consensus on the issue.

Although the Polish government had not officially announced its stance on Kosovo as WBJ went to press, Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski made it clear early last week that Poland had joined the large majority of European nations that intend to recognize Kosovo's independence. Only three EU countries - Cyprus, Romania and Spain - refused to recognize Kosovo, although several others reserved their opinions.

The US announced its recognition of the state's sovereignty on the day after it declared independence.

China and Russia were the most notable world powers which refused to recognize Kosovo. Moscow claimed that Kosovo's actions were illegal for a number of reasons and called on the international community to intervene. China called on Kosovo and Serbia to continue negotiations.

NATO entered Serbia nine years ago to end brutal attacks on the Kosovar Albanian population. The intervention ended the violence and the UN Security Council suspended Belgrade's governance, placing Kosovo under interim UN administration. Kosovo has since built its own democratic institutions. Last year, UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari developed a plan to build a democratic and multi-ethnic Kosovo and recommended that it be independent.

The US and other will not renounce nationhood. The the US and major EU will not give in to russians. Just because russia and serbia dont agree, that does not mean the rest will side with them. The independence is the right thing, serbs need to move on because kosova will never be controled by belgrade.

The U.S. recognition of Kosovo is honorable and responsible. Kosovo independence has been in the making for many years. Now, the Kosovo people deserve freedom and rights of an autonomous democratic state. I am happy to see Poland and other countries support the cause; and we all want a peaceful transition.

Of course you would say that because you are a Serb-American. A true American supports freedom.

I am an American, and I think that the actions of my country and of the majority of E.U. nations is foolish. Poland has now recognized Kosovo as an independent nation. This can only further alienate Serbia and Russia. Unless the U.S. and her E.U. allies renounce Kosovar nationhood, we will be at War with Russia within a month. March 25th is Serbia's de facto independence day. If nothing is resolved by this date, I expect Serbia to launch an attack to reclaim Kosovo, seeing as how this is a highly symbolic date. It may also go down in history as the date that saw the beginning of World War III.
