Sweden recognizes Kosovo

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt today confirmed that Sweden will during the day today officially recognize the Republic of Kosovo as anticipated. Swedish foreign minister Carl Bildt has earlier confirmed that this is the Swedish stance but prefered to wait until today when the Swedish foreign committee was planning the special session regarding the independence of Kosovo.

Sweden reaffirms that the Kosovar issue is an unique case which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Swedish diplomats, responsible for the Swedish consulate in Prishtina will today meet with Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi and President Fatmir Sejdiu to hand over the recognition letters together with the invitiation for diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Sweden and the Republic of Kosovo. It is expected that the consulate of Sweden in Prishtina will soon be transformed to a regular embassy.
