Finland recognizes Kosovo
Helsinki - Finnish President Tarja Halonen on Friday recognized Kosovo's independence and authorized the government to establish diplomatic ties with Pristina. The official recognition came a day after the government proposed the move and more than two weeks after the former Balkan province declared itself independent of Serbia on Feb. 17.

More than two dozen countries have recognized Kosovo's independence, including the U.S., Britain, France and Germany.

The Foreign Ministry also said Friday that Finland, which has representatives covering 80 different fields of expertise in the European Union's mission in Kosovo, KFOR, will increase the number of its peacekeepers to 450.
