![]() Germany was among the first to recognize Kosovo “According to Resolution 1244, it was required that at a certain time, there would be a decision made on the status. It is unfortunate that this solution did not find support in Serbia but not even Resolution 1244 envisioned upholding the status quo in Kosovo. We believe that Kosovo’s case is sui generis and for this reason we have decided to recognize Kosovo,” Merkel stated. “We do not believe that based on Kosovo, there can be parallels drawn for other regions. It is clear that we differ from Russia on this matter, but in Germany, we are convinced that this was the right path,” she added. In presenting to the Assembly, Merkel also notified that with the ratification of the Treaty of Lisbon, a legal possibility is created that the European Union will expand to the Western Balkans area.
