According to the plans of reconfiguration of UN presence in Kosovo it’s predicted that UNMIK Chief will not stay in Prishtina, but in the UN headquarters in New York, announces Kosovo daily Express.

Current Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Kosovo and head of UNMIK , Joachim Rucker, according to this paper, will be engaged in another position in the office of the UN Secretary General or in the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations.

According to Express, in the absence of UNMIK chief, UN’s limited presence in Kosovo will be lead by a chargé d’affaires. UN presence in Kosovo is expected to be a small legal and political office, whose main duty would be to report to New York on Kosovo developments. This office will compile a quarterly technical report which will be sent to the Secretary General through his Special Representative.

The relocation is not expected to take place until the reconfiguration is over at least until the end of June.

The remaining responsibilities held by UNMIK will be transferred over to the Kosovo institutions once the recently adopted Kosovo constitution goes into effect on June 15. UNMIK mandate could not close down due to the objections by Russia in the UN Security Council to a new resolution that would supersede the current one.
