UN's head to offer Belgrade agreement on UNMIK reconfiguration? PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 30 May 2008
ImageDiplomatic sources from the UN reportedly spoke to Kosovo daily Zeri about the content of the draft letter that UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, is to address to Serbian President, Boris Tadic, after he presents to the Security Council on 5 June his ideas on how to reconfigure UNMIK after 15 June when Kosovo Constitution is to enter into force.

Sources said that Ban, at the start of the letter, reaffirms the neutral position of the UN towards the status of Kosovo, and in this light he proposes the reconfiguration of UNMIK which, among other things, would include the idea that KPS in certain areas with the Serbian majority would report to the international police under UN authority. In the field of the judiciary, Ban proposes the creation of additional local and district courts in areas with Serbian majority but which would operate according to the unified Kosovo judiciary.

Ban also proposes the appointment of a new SRSG, which according to Zëri is likely to be the Italian diplomat Stefano Sanino who headed the OSCE in Serbia.

Silent reconfiguration of UNMIK in the north

The paper reports that UNMIK’s reconfiguration could start in the north of Kosovo, meaning that UNMIK would return to this part and establish full control on the borderline between Kosovo and Serbia. This, says the paper, was said by a diplomat from a country that has already recognized the independence of Kosovo whilst commenting on the reconfiguration of the international presence.
