Eliot Engel

American congressman Eliot Engel, who attended the session during which the constitution was promulgated, promised Kosovars that regardless of who turns out to be the next US President, the politics of engagement and close relations will continue with Kosovo.

"I will assure you that the US will always be beside the Kosovo population, with the aim of building a powerful and independent state. Kosovo and the US have so much in common, including the ideals of freedom and democracy,” said Engel.

In addition he referred to Kosovo Prime Minister, Hashim Thaçi, as a hero.

“I know that your Prime Minister Thaçi went through difficult years. They took up weapons to liberate their country and did not allow themselves to become second class citizens. Prime Minister, I want to tell you directly that you are a hero,” papers quoted Engel as saying.

Moving onto UNMIK, Engel stated that it is time for mission to leave Kosovo. “It is time that UNMIK leaves Kosovo. Moreover, the negative role of Serbia and Russia should come to an end, while the EULEX mission should extend over the whole territory of Kosovo”.
