In the latest Kosovo situation report published Monday by Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the issue of overall public safety in Kosovo has been evaluated as commendable, followed by recommendations to continue with improvements in this field.
Kosovo Minister of Interior Affairs, Zenun Pajaziti, at a press conference organized by OSCE, stated that "the role and importance of the OSCE mission in Kosovo has been always welcomed, because they have been helping the country in many fields."
The Minister stressed that "development of democracy and the increase of public safety as two vital components of our country are imperative for our national security, and the publication of this report, which it based on a public survey of citizens, reflects our serious responsible work and dedication to deal with security issues in the Republic of Kosovo."
According to Minister Pajaziti, it is very important to emphasize the fact that "there are positive developments in the advancement of security structures in Kosovo, which shows our close cooperation with legislative and judicial authorities to establish an effective police force, capable of building a trustful and reliable relationship with the society."
Pajaziti stressed the significance of the continued support received from the international community in the education and training of the security mechanisms. "There are still some complaints, flaws and unsatisfactory responses, but we are working to eliminate those,” he added.
The Minister of Interior Affairs, also spoke of the issues in northern Kosovo where he said that "the Serbian minority members of Kosovo Police Service unfortunately have been manipulated by various Serbia-backed nationalist groups, forcing them to disobey the orders of the Kosovo Police Headquarters."
The Chief of OSCE in Kosovo, Tim Guildmann, explained that the obtained information regarding the safety issues in Kosovo are based on a survey taken in the entire territory of Kosovo in the months of November and December of 2007. "The general opinion regarding the work and responsibility of the security public organs is very good," he said.
The OSCE chief stressed that considering that there has been no trust on security organs by the population until 1999, "today, we witness a strong faith at these security organs and the efficacy of the Kosovo police force is higher compared to other police forces in the Balkans region. Kosovo citizens have a flexible and reliable police force," concluded Guildmann.
