Latvia interested in investing in Kosovo PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 July 2008
ImageForeign Minister of Latvia Mâris Riekstiņš met today with Kosovo President Fatmir Sejdiu, Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi and Foreign Minister Skënder Hyseni. Latvian minister said that his country will invest in different sectors in the Republic of Kosovo.

Kosovo independence is an irreversible process and the government is now focused on the speeding up of investments for the improvement of living standards and the overall economic development of the country. Latvian Foreign Minister Mâris Riekstiņš, whose country was one of the first to recognized Kosovo, was in agreement with this stance.

After the meeting Riekstiņš promised the support of his government for Kosovo. “We are dedicated to close cooperation, and not only in dialogue or political work, but practical cooperation in many fields. We will help the Prishtina authorities in the process of state building and also in economic cooperation,” said Riekstiņš.

Riekstiņš said that several Riekstiņš companies have expressed readiness to invest, and several others already operate in Kosovo.

PM Thaçi valued the support of the Latvian government, and promised stable business environment for all foreign investors. On this occasion, Thaçi expressed his belief that Kosova will get the predicted support at the donor’s conference on Friday in Brussels.

Kosovo will have problems in securing investments until it becomes full member of the international financial institutions. This could be surpassed once Kosovo is recognized by the needed number of states. “Kosovo will very soon create the necessary number of recognitions so that it can safely apply for full membership in different international economic, political, and financial structures and institutions,” said Hyseni.

He said that Kosovo will build good relations with all countries, including Serbia, despite the latter’s negative stance towards Kosovo.
