United Nations General Secretary, Ban Ki-Moon has advised his special representative in Kosovo, Lamberto Zannier, to begin “reconfiguration” of the UN mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), was announced on Thursday in New York.

 

UNMIK “reconfiguration” is used to denote the massive drawdown of UN personnel and transfer of duties so far held by UNMIK to the Republic of Kosovo institutions and European Union’s EULEX mission.

 

In his rapport, Ban, despite the disagreement of Russia, aims to continue with the plan of transfer of competences from UNMIK to the EU mission EULEX.

 

The newly created realities in Kosovo, including here the entry into force of the new Kosovo constitution, on 15 June, have fundamentally changed the UN mission, which cannot anymore do its duties in an efficient manner, concludes Ban’s report.
