Kosovo population census next year PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 July 2008
ImageKosovo government approved on Wednesday the plan of the Ministry of Public Services to register the population, family economies, and housing of Kosovo to take place next year between 31 March and 15 April.

This will be the first population census Kosovo will undergo in 27 years. The government has forwarded to the parliament this date and the relevant recommendations to get the formal approval.

Officials from the Ministry of Public Services stated that all the necessary preparations have been taken to realize the project.
“The legal basis and the financial support have been secured for the Kosovo government to realize this project successfully,” said the Minister of Public Services Arsim Bajrami.

“Two were the reasons that led to the decision: first, population census is an obligation of the Ahtisaari Plan and second, the support of European donors,” said Bajrami

Last legitimate population registration in Kosovo took place in 1981. The census of 1991 performed by the imposed regime of Belgrade was boycotted by the majority ethnic Albanian population who was undergoing massive emigration as a result of the political persecution at the time.
