Secretary Rice pledges strong support for independent Kosovo PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 July 2008
ImageThe US State Secretary, Condoleezza Rice, met today the President and the Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo.

"I have congratulated the president and prime minister of the Republic of Kosovo for the progress they have accomplished, particularly on the implementation of Ahtisaari Plan since Kosovo became independent and sovereign," said Rice.

Secretary Rice mentioned that the majority of the European Union nations, Japan, Canada, Australia have recognized Kosovo and there will be more recogntions.  She also reminded that majority of the members of the UN Security Council have recognized the Republic of Kosovo and its opponents must accept the fact that Kosovo is independent and sovereign.

Rice added that the United States will continue to assist the Republic of Kosovo as it builds its multiethnic democratic institutions, mentioning the recent donors' conference where the US pledged to donate 400 million dollars and more than 1 billion dollars contributed for various projects for Kosovo in the last decade.

President of the Republic of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu, thanked the United States on behalf of the Kosovar nation and its institutions for supporting the economic development and democratic social progress in Kosovo. "During our meeting, we expressed our appreciation and our dedication to continue to build a democratic nation for all citizens of the Republic of Kosovo, as one of our main objectives. We also stressed our focus to establish a stable economy and our intent to continue the policy of making Kosovo a stability factor in the Balkans," stated Sejdiu.

Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, also expressed his appreciation for the powerful support of the Unites States. "Today, the Republic of Kosovo is a peaceful, stable and in excellent cooperation with its regional neighbors, as well as intending to follow the same policy with its other neighbor, Serbia. Certainly, Kosovo has made a commendable progress in the last six months. This is a historic moment for the Republic of Kosovo because this is the first time that the Kosovo Prime Minister and President visit the United States as sovereign leaders of the independent Kosovo state. We also expressed our dedication to pursue further progress towards integration in the Euro-Atlantic structures. Kosovar nation and institutions are gracious to the American government and people for the support they have given to the Republic of Kosovo," concluded Thaci.

In a follow up question, Secretary Rice stressed that "Kosovo, as a sovereign country, has determined people and also determined friends."

"During Donors' Conference we witnessed the ability of the sovereign nation of the Republic of Kosovo to establish relations with other sovereign nations. The United State will continue in assisting Kosovo in all ways, while at the same time building good relations with its neighbor, Serbia ", stressed Secretary Rice.

US Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates hosts an honor cordon to welcome President Sejdiu and Prime Minister Hashim Thaci to the Pentagon today at 2 p.m. local time. Whereas on Monday the state delegation of the Republic of Kosovo is to meet the President of the United States, George W. Bush.

Robert-o,

You are very welcome!

Your interest on Kosova is both insperational and delighting to know. All of us sometimes need that "push" to put our concerns into actions and make a difference; showing the world of the attrocities the Serbs have commited against the Albanians. It is truly good to know that somebody out there who cares stands up for what is right. smilies/smiley.gif

It would be great to read your book when it comes out! Do you have a personal website or a personal blog as well?

Take Care! smilies/smiley.gif

thank you, valbona. it was a bit self-serving of me to write this, but sometimes i just get so exhausted and overwhelmed by fighting the "good fight." anyway, it is my choice to take on a largely antagonistic audience (b-92); once i realized just what i was dealing with i could easily have just stopped...

the truth is i had hardly even heard of Kosovo until 1999 (just very peripherally) -- and then when i saw what was happening, day after day, with the columns of refugees, the burned villages and mass graves, it was just too much. suddenly the whole "mystery" of the balkans became crystal clear, and i made up my mind not to rest until milosevic was gone. now he is gone (may he never return) but unfortunately things have not progressed as i would have hoped -- some of us were pretty naive. nevertheless, the wars and genocide are over (for the time being) and kosova has obtained her independence... thank god.

we are in the process of writing a book about these events, and i am always open to personal stories, from the war, from its aftermath, or even from way back during the second world war: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

peace.

It's so nice to be loved -- by somebody! i have fought for a long time (with words) for kosova's independence, and mostly i don't get a lot of appreciation (esp. on b-92). but hey, we do what we know is right, what we know we must, and let things happen as they may.

this bush administration is not my favorite, to say the least (!), sorry... but about kosova, they continued the clinton policies and got it right.

best of luck in the future, in just a few weeks i will get to see kosova with my frnds, this time "Newborn." it was a long and hard struggle.

cheers!

A sense of normalcy has returned to many parts of Kosovo. In the eyes of many of its inhabitants, the status of Kosovo has been settled in spite of the continued UN administration. Signs of positive change in Kosovo are obvious, yet the dilemma of inter-ethnic reconciliation remains. As the United States Institute for Peace says, "No solution for Kosovo can last without a solution for Mitrovica."
