High Russian officials have stated that Kosovo is sui generis, as is the case with South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
But despite recognizing these two separatist Georgian regions, Russian officials announced that Russia does not intend to recognize Kosovo.
"Recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is in total agreement with international law," stated Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. He said that every case of recognition is special, so according to him, "the situation in Kosovo is sui generis and so is the situation in South Ossetia and Abkhazia." Russian ambassador to the UN, Vitaly Churkin, had another view. He stated that Russia does not intend to recognize Kosovo independence while adding that "Kosovo precedent" influenced Moscow's decision to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Whereas Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that drawing parallels between the recognition of Kosovo on one hand and the recognition of Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia on the hand is not appropriate. According to Lavrov, Belgrade was punished unjustly for Albanians who "did not respect negotiating mechanisms, whereas the government in Tbilisi has not been punished at all."

... The point is being missed here. this is not about the legitimacy of any claim by any country for their right to be independent. This is about two superpowers playing their games in an attempt tp be in a stronger position that the other. If it suited their purpose they would sacrifice anything to suceed in their game. The retoric will never be and could never be logical or sensible within such a game and the game is not very sporting on either side as they commit fouls against each other at every opportunity. Someone wil realise on both sides one day, that there can be no winner to such a game and they need to work out fairer rules that will allow each side to feel they are being treated with respect. Until they grow up enough to do this innocent people will suffer because of their immaturity. |

... This clearly shows the utter hypocrisy of NATO and the EU. The and the EU have clearly stated that they respect the territorial integrity of all nations. Does this mean that the EU and NATO nations will reverse their illegal decision on Kosovos independence? In fact, South Ossetians and Abkhazians have a far greater claim to their independence than the k-Albanains ever have. It was the Georgians who instigated the conflict by committing genocide and killing over 1400 people within 24 hours! Russia was well within its legal and moral rights to defend its people against Georgian aggression. How can k-Albanians support Georgian territorial integrity and at the same time declare their own independence? Does anyone smell a pile of BS coming from the albanian side? |

... At least they are dropping every apparence of acting on principle, and effectively letting down the Serbian annexionists. |

... They are merely aping the West's arguments about Kosovo in order to rationalize their imperialistic aggression, as if they counted on everyone to believe their, and Belgrade's propaganda. The West was acting on principle, THEY are acting on an absence of principles. Yet, they are making the West pay the moral and political fault they committed when they failed to recognize Kosova's independence based on a correct interpretation of the 1974 Constitution while recognizing Slovenia and Croatia in January 1992. Yet, in order to fight neo-Soviet imperialism it remains essential to recall the institutional differences between Kosova and the parts of Georgia Moscow wants to steal, as well as the double standard Belgrade used when fostering separatism in Croatia while completing the forced annexation of Kosova in 1990. |
