Wednesday, 15 October 2008

ImageKosovo health workers, who for two days were striking with the request for higher wages, stopped their strike after an agreement with the government.

Through a joint declaration signed by the Minister of Health Alush Gashi and the President of the Federal Union of Health in Kosovo Asllan Bajrami an agreement was reached to increase pay 34% for all technical health workers, nurses' pay by 28% and doctors’ pay by 19%.

The agreement will go into effect starting 1 January 2009 and affect 13,247 health workers.

Also according to the agreement, the health workers seniority earned during the 1990's will be recognized, there will be compensation for risky positions and health workers will be removed from the category of civil servants.

Other unions have announced strikes if their demands for higher wages are not met.
