President of the European Commission Jose-Manuel Barroso stated in Brussels that the fact that the absolute majority of the EU states have recognized Kosovo "is proof that this situation cannot serve as precedent for Georgian separatist regions - South Ossetia and Abkhazia."

"Since the beginning we’ve said that Kosovo cannot be considered precedent. The development of events proved that Kosovo has been recognized by a considerable number of world countries, the absolute majority of EU members, as well as many other states outside of Europe...while Georgian regions have not been recognized by anyone significant in the world," said Barroso after the meeting with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

Saakashvili on the other hand said that the difference is in the fact that "NATO acted in Kosovo to stop ethnic cleansing whereas Russia has come to Georgia to commit ethnic cleansing."

Thaçi thanks UAE

Meanwhile Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi in a conference for the media in Prishtina thanked the Government of the United Arab Emirates for the recognition of Kosovo.

"Arab states are now joining the stream of recognitions of the Republic of Kosovo. We strongly believe that the recognition by the United Arab Emirates will continue with recognitions by other Arab countries," stated PM Thaçi.

Republic of Kosovo will build bilateral relations with the UAE and all-inclusive cooperation for the interests of both our countries and people, said Thaçi.
