UN spokesman: UN approval not necessary for EULEX in Kosovo PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 21 November 2008
ImageUN spokesman Brandon Varma said on Tuesday that it is up to the EU to decide when to deploy EULEX to Kosovo hinting that a Security Council or Ban Ki-moon decision is not necessary. “We have said that we support the EULEX operation under the UN umbrella. EULEX is a European mission and it is up to the European Union to decide when to deploy it,” said Varma.

According to him, Ban Ki-moon’s report on Kosovo, which is expected to be made public this week, could explain many things regarding the UN stance on this issue. Varma also denied the Serbia's statement that the six-point plan will be approved by the UN.

The chief of EULEX mission Yves de Kermabon in one of his latest reports presented at the European Union Policy and Security Committee stressed that on December 1 EULEX will have 1,300 members in Kosovo. He said that the aim of EULEX is to be deployed in Kosova by the end of winte, meaning that the deployment of EULEX will take more time than expected). Speaking of the deployment in the north of Kosovo, Kermabon said that "the best case scenario is that the we will have at least a symbolic presence of EULEX in the north by the end of year, while hoping to be fully operational by spring.

Kosovar Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi during an interview for BBC said that "six-point plan is dead, and Prishtina's stance remains firm within the framework of the four-point plan, which foresees the EULEX mission to be deployed in accordance with the Constution of the Republic of Kosovo and the Ahtisaari plan while entirely rejects the six-point plan."

Also, Kosovo opposition voiced their strong support for the Kosovo's Government proposal of the four-point plan while stressing that six-point plan is entirely unacceptable.
