European Greens: UN creates new 'frozen conflict' in Kosovo PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 01 December 2008
ImageAngelika Beer, spokesperson for security policy and coordinator for foreign policy for the Greens/European Free Alliance in the European Parlimanet, has issued a warning regarding the UN Security Council’s agreement to the six-point plan concerning Kosovo’s future and the launch of the EU-Mission EULEX.

“By mandating the EU-mission EULEX under UN command the UN laid the foundation stone for a divided Kosovo and the demarcation of new borders in the Balkans.

Instead of contributing to the resolution of the conflict, the UN gave in to Serbia’s aggressive territorial politics. With Lamberto Zannier the UN has a no longer acceptable advocate of Serbia’s interests as its head of mission in Kosovo. The way Zannier has conducted the negotiations with Belgrade in the past months, he actively has torpedoed  the implementation of the EULEX-mission.

By accepting the de-facto division of Kosovo under UN-control the UN has created a ‘frozen conflict’ in the Balkans with far reaching consequences. The action of the UN is unacceptable for the government of Kosovo since it undermines the sovereignty of Pristina and destabilises the young state. The to date biggest peace keeping mission of the EU, EULEX, is doomed to fail the same way as the Ahtissari-plan, due to this forced neutrality.

We call on the UN and the EU to develop an action plan for the Western Balkans in participation with all those affected in order to ensure that the foreseeable new borders are devised in a peaceful way,” concludes the statement issued by Angelika Beer.
