Albania’s president Bamir Topi began a two-day visit to Kosovo. This is the first official visit of a president in independent Kosovo. He congratulated the Kosovo lawmakers for declaring the independence of Kosovo and assured them that Albania will use all possible diplomatic means for Kosovo’s voice to be present in all regional and European integration discussions.
President Bamir Topi along with a high diplomatic delegation arrived in
the Republic of Kosovo. President Topi visited Kosovo last year just
before Kosovo declared its independence.
After signing the symbol of Kosovo’s independence, NEWBORN, the Albanian president, together with the Kosovo president, was welcomed by the Honor Guard before the Kosovo Assembly. The Albanian president greeted the work of the Kosovo institutions in respecting the rights of all citizens. On this occasion, Topi called on Serbia to respect the rights of Albanians in Serbia in the same way that Kosovo respects the rights of Serbs, instead of destabilizing the situation in Kosovo. He reiterated the support of Albania to Kosovo.
“I assure you that Albania, through its institutions, will continue to condemn all of these negative undertaking which have a Serbian ultra-nationalist background by telling Serbia that such situations no longer belong in the Western Balkans,” said Bamir Topi.
At this meeting, they also discussed a plan for free movement with Albania in order to form a mini-Schengen in the Southeastern Europe. “I proposed an idea and the President and I discussed it during my visit to Albania. This would be a mini-Schengen of Southeastern Europe. Let this be a good example…,” said President Fatmir Sejdiu.
President Topi also met with Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi. Topi thanked the Kosovo institutions for the brotherly welcome. Topi said that there will be new recognitions.
Regarding the situation in the north, Prime Minister Thaçi said that the situation is calm. “We want Belgrade to invest in the Serbs of Kosovo, so that they become part of the Kosovar society…And the Kosovo Government will invest for people, both from the north and from the south, to have the right to return to their houses and apartments. The only solution to the Mitrovica problem is integration,” said Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi.
Afterwards, Topi visited the Kosovo Assembly where he addressed the members of parliament. “Kosovo and Albania have made it clear that they want to belong to Europe, also politically. Our citizens deserve free movement inside this civilized world. The only future is Brussels. This is the partnership we offer to our international friends. This is the secure future we provide to our children. Thank You,” said President Topi.
