The European Union Special Representative / International Civilian Representative in Kosovo Pieter Feith is on the side of the United Nations commitments in order to organize a round of talks between Prishtina and Belgrade. In his first press appearance for this year, the International Civilian Representative encouraged the Government of Kosovo to accept the dialogue with Serbia. By all means, the dialogue between Prishtina and Belgrade will be based on the scenario compiled by the UNMIK chief Lamberto Zannier.

“I think that there are still issues that need to be resolved, and the best way would be to resolve these issues through directs talks between Prishtina and Belgrade,” Peter Feith said, after a meeting he had in his office with the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Babacan.

If the talks are held based on the foreseen scenario, Kosovo and Serbia would have to sit at the table and discuss the issues described in the six-point contradictory plan that was reached between the United Nations Organization and Belgrade in November of last year; however, this plan has been rejected by the Kosovo authorities.

The Dutch diplomat Pieter Feith, who coordinates the efforts made by those countries that have recognized Kosovo through the International Steering Group, said that the International Civilian Office is ready to support the Government of Kosovo regarding these talks.

“Let us wait and see how things will go. I can say that the International Civilian Office is ready to support the Government of Kosovo concerning its participation in these possible talks,” he said.

He also called upon the institutions of Kosovo to begin this process and see what they can benefit during its course. “It is important for the government to fully participate in order to carefully analyze what the benefits are and what is the importance of these arrangements for Kosovo,” Feith said.

Asked in what way he and his office will be engaged in these talks, Feith preferred not to hurry by making statements. “I do not think we should speculate at this moment. It would be better to wait and see what the further developments are. Therefore, we should not speculate concerning this issue,” Feith stressed.

For the Serbian government to treat Kosova like a sovereign state, the internationals would have to start acting that way.
