Analysts: UN tacitly recognizes Kosovo

Both Kosovar and Serbian analysts agree that Kosovo has gained momentum at the last UNSC session while they stress that now seems very apparent that the UN tacitly recognizes Kosovo's statehood.

Today's meeting was very important, considering the powerful position of the Kosovar Foreign Minister , Skender Hyseni, which was very proactive and came up with legitimate requests, not in the position of defense but in the position of advancement, and looking towards the future, says Kosovar analyst Ramush Tahiri.

"Importantly, the issues that Hyseni raised at the UN regarding Serbia's behavior, open problems we have, including the fate of over 2000 missing Kosovar Albanians are  critical to increase the momentum of Kosovo's position versus Serbia" adds Tahiri.

Meanwhile, the Serbian analyst, Dusan Janjic added that "the already familiar stances on Kosovo were expected to be heard once again at the meeting."

"It will be shameful for Serbia to miss its chance to express its commitment to cooperation with the European Union's mission, EULEX," said Janjic

Janjic stressed that the position of the state of Kosovo at UN is powerful today, considering the fact that UN Security Council members give Kosovo an equal opportunity to represent itself, which certainly displays the acknowledgement of the new reality occurring in Kosovo.

“However, the status question has been solved in an indirect way with a new step, and that is the presence of the Kosovo Foreign Minister. In essence, the Security Council is starting to listen to the Kosovo side of the debate in equal dialogue with Serbia,” concluded Janjic.

A Cambridge international law scholar told the BalkanInsight a few weeks ago,  on his analysis, that the UN and its mission in Kosovo have "tacitly accepted" the declaration of independence of Kosovo.

There are supposed to be 5 comments, I only see 4. And it seems unwise to operate a policy of reveal "low rated" comments only on request. All that is likely to do is encourage bloc voting, just like Eurovision.

Tacit acceptance seems a positive step forward. However both sides need to resolve the issue of the missing without further delay. Politics is one thing, basic humanity is another.
