Belgian Secretary for European Affairs, Olivier Chastel, has stated that Serbia in no way can become a member of the European Union, without recognizing Kosovo's independence.

"Serbia should be aware that its partners in the EU membership issue are not the European Commission, but the 27 European Union member countries - 22 (85%) of which have already recognized Kosovo's independence," said Chastel.

In an interview for the web portal Eurobserver senior Belgian official said that neither Serbia nor any other country in the Western Balkans have no reason for excessive optimism in integration issues during the presidency of the European Union by Belgium, which begins in June this year.
