On Thursday, the European Union Parliament ha been strongly positioned
vis-à-vis the independence of Kosovo by adopting a resolution that calls
by the five European Union countries to recognize the new state which
still have not done so and as a reason to strengthen the common approach
of EU towards Kosovo state.
455 deputies voted for the resolution, and 155 were against, while 28 deputies abstained. The resolution drafted by Austrian European Union Parliament deputy Ulrike Lunacek, says that “members of the European Parliament will welcome “recognition of the independence of Kosovo by all EU member states,” and recalls that the declaration of independence of Kosovo has been recognized by 69 states.
The parliament "notes that 22 EU Member States have recognized Kosovo as an independent country and five have not; [it] encourages Member States, in order to make EU policies more effective for all the people in Kosovo, to step up their common approach towards Kosovo with the objective of Kosovo's accession to the EU; welcomes the constructive attitude towards Kosovo emphasized by the Spanish Presidency in spite of its non-recognition of the country; [it] would welcome the recognition by all Member States of the independence of Kosovo."
The European Parliament "made clear that European integration is the future of an independent Kosovo," said Ulrike Lunacek, a Green party MEP from Austria and the author of the Kosovo resolution.
The European Parliament also expressed its position against division of Kosovo. “Despite the distinctions among some member states regarding the status of Kosovo, it is important for the EU to engage in Kosovo and this commitment is essential tokeep stability and security with the immediate EU neighbors,” says the resolution, which also requests that path to the process for visa liberalization be opened.
Kosovar daily newspapers report that the Resolution was welcomed in Kosovo. President Fatmir Sejdiu said that adoption of the resolution strongly proves the commitment of the European Union for the Republic of Kosovo and its citizens. He also highly values the engagement of the Austrian deputy Ulrike Lunacek. Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi said that the resolution has been adopted at the right time, when a message for the other countries of the European Union was required.
