The first shots came from Serbia, which surprised the European Union by submitting a go-it-alone draft-resolution on Thursday on the outcome of the International Court of Justice's legal recognition of Kosovo's declaration of independence.
Serbia's draft-resolution was instantly rejected by the European officials.
Furthermore, the European Union responded on the same day to Serbia's move by introducing its own draft-resolution.
Kosovo daily's Express sources have confirmed that the Office of the High Representative of the EU, Catherine Ashton, has circulated a draft-resolution to all diplomatic missions of EU countries in New York.
Express has obtained a copy of the European resolution, whose content is different from the Serbian resolution.
The European Union proposes that the General Assembly approves ICJ's opinion which says that the declaration of independence was not in contradiction with international law.
"We respectfully accept the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice ruling of July 22, 2010 that Kosovo's declaration of independence is in accordance with the international law, which is the response to the request of the General Assembly", says the first point of resolution.
Paragraph 2 of this resolution indirectly encourages Kosovo and Serbia to discuss cooperation to promote neighborly economic, democratic development and regional stability in line with their European future, but nowhere does it refer to the status of Kosovo, as does the Serbian draft-resolution.
"(General Assembly) welcomes the intent of the parties to continue progress on neighborly cooperation, democratic, economic and regional stability, in line with their European perspective," concludes EU's resolution.
Diplomatic sources have said that permanent missions of EU member states at the United Nations were given several days to declare whether they agree with the contents of the resolution.
However, the same sources predict that such a wording of the resolution should not be a problem even to EU's five member that have not yet recognized Kosovo.
With regard to the text of the Serbian draft-resolution that indirectly calls for Kosovo status talks, Belgrade media reported that European diplomacy has announced that Serbian tentative is completely unacceptable.
Powerful EU members, UK, France and Germany have hinted that Serbian Foreign Ministry's text draft-resolution submitted to UN General Assembly will damage Serbia's chances at joining the EU.
Moreover, the Serbian daily "Blic" writes that the UK has urged Belgrade to withdraw the resolution.
French Foreign Minister Bernad Kouchner has urged Serbia to change its stance, face the reality that Kosovo, an independent and sovereign state, is its neighbor and neighborly relations are crucial to Serbia's entry application to EU.
Diplomatic battle over the resolution based on the verdict of ICJ for Kosovo can last more than two months. The winner will be known in the second half of September or at the latest in early October.
