North Remains Source of Illegal Economy

Mitrovica

The North of Kosovo continues to be the main source of illegal economic activities, Radio Free Europe reports.

According to authorities, the state budget loses over EUR 30 million every year from that part of the country. However, experts claim that this number reaches over EUR 100 million. The 30 million is lost as a result of the current situation at Points 1 and 31 in the north, where no control is exercised.

Three years ago, on February 19, Serbs burnt down border points in Leposaviq and Zubin Potok, also known as Points 1 and 31. This is also the time when Kosovo customs authorities left from the north. A year later, EULEX troops stationed in these points, who register but do not apply the necessary customs regulations to goods going in and out of Kosovo to Serbia and vice-versa.

Kosovo Customs authorities have indicated their committment to fight illegal activities in the north. They have a healthy cooperation with the Police and the Tax Administration of Kosovo, with whom they have formed a special task-force to target specific criminal groups.
