Marty: I Have Been Missunderstood

  • PDF
Dick Marty

Dick Marty makes a sudden appearance for the Albanian media. In a long interview given to the Swiss-based Albanian news agency Albinfo.ch, Marty discusses in detail about his report.

In this interview, he talks about the mandate he was given to prepare the report, emphasizing that his activity and the report should never be understood as something aimed against the Kosovar and the Albanian communities.

He goes on to say that his report on Kosovo brings him only trouble, and by no means does it bring him profit of any nature. Marty makes it clear that it wasn't him who asked for the mandate, but that it was entrusted upon him by others.

"I did it with full conscience. I know that seeking the truth can be painful, but it was never my intention to criticize or criminalize a community. I have a lot of Kosovar and Albanian acquaintances. Many of them live in Switzerland, and God knows I never had any problem with them."

Marty then goes on to say that his report was misunderstood. He claims that all he did was express criticism that is essentially of a legal nature. Kosovo's independence was also addressed in the interview.

"As far as the independence is concerned, I never opposed the independence as such. I opposed and criticized it from e legal perspective in the capacity of chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, based on legal assessments of internationally renowned professors, who had demonstrated us that the way independence was declared was not completely correct."

Who is Dick Marty?

Dick Marty is originally from Ticino (CH). He is a counsel at the Cantonal Council (composed of representatives of all cantons of Switzerland). He has previously been State Advisor. He has had a significant career as Attorney General and has a big preference for particularly sensitive cases, as was the case with his report on CIA secret prisons, made public in 2006. Marty is a highly respected personality in Switzerland and abroad. Since 2010, he has been chairman of the Council of the University of Neuchatel, and was appointed chairman of the Cross-Jurasiene Assembly, a job not easy in the context of Switzerland.
