The European Union, through a statement by the President of the Council of Europe, Herman Van Rompuy, denied allegations that Europe will close its doors for the rest of the Western Balkan states, after Croatia joins the Union.
During a visit to Poland, Van Rompuy declared that he favors a strong involvement in the Union of all countries that remain, left from the Cold War. He spoke about Brussels' official aims, starting with the attempts to stabilize the Euro, the efforts to return the economic growth through the new Framework for the Climatic Adaptation of the Union's Energy Plan, and the strong role of the old continent in the political arena.
Speaking about Balkans' EU perspective, Van Rompuy said that "Europe is the best guarantee for peace. That is why I strongly bind to the European prospect of Western Balkans, the last remaining part of the Cold War and the last place where war broke out".
"Europe should be the homeland of peace, we owe that to our history" concluded Rompuy.
