President Rugova

The figure of the first president of Kosovo, Ibrahim Rugova, will be commemorated on the fifth anniversary of his death, in two separate academies.

One will be held by the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), which he founded and led for sixteen years, while the other will be held under the auspices of the Prime Minister's Office. Both events are expected to gather senior local and international personalities.

Ibrahim Rugova is recognized as the first president of Kosovo, emerged from the parliamentary elections organized by the interim administration of the United Nations. He was president until the day of his death, on January 21, 2006, when he lost his battle with cancer.

Rugova is regarded as a symbol of Albanians' peaceful resistance for freedom, and is held as an independence icon.
