Serbia and Kosovo Set for More Talks

Brussels_Serbian and Kosovar Albanian leaders are to meet face to face in Brussels on Sunday for their second round of direct talks on Kosovo’s status under the auspices of an international “Troika” of mediators.

 

 

The Kosovar Albanian delegation will be represented at the highest level, with its Unity Team of negotiators, while the Serbian side will be attending at ministerial level.

Direct Kosovo talks resume on Sunday

BRUSSELS, KRAGUJEVAC, BELGRADE -- Direct talks between Belgrade and Priština are set to resume tomorrow in the UN Headquarters in Brussels.

“The Contact Group Troika of mediators will tomorrow try to engage Belgrade and Priština to exchange views in a more active manner, in order to move the talks from the testing phase to the genuine negotiations,” officials from the EU Ministerial Council told Beta on Saturday.

They conveyed the Troika’s belief that “certain common points can be discerned in the stances thus far heard from Belgrade and Priština, even though their starting positions remain far apart.”

U.S. and Russia clash at U.N. over Kosovo

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United States and Russia clashed anew over Kosovo on Tuesday, as Washington's U.N. envoy said Serb-Albanian talks needed to end in two months while Moscow's called for them to carry on until agreement.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said a premature end to negotiations, leading Kosovo Albanians to declare independence, would destabilize the region, a prospect he described as unacceptable.

But U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said what would be destabilizing is prolonged further uncertainty over the future of the Serbian province, which has been under U.N. administration for the past eight years.

US diplomat says December deadline for negotiating Kosovo settlement must be met

UNITED NATIONS: A top U.S. diplomat said Tuesday that international negotiators must meet a December deadline to determine the future status of Kosovo, while Russia's U.N. ambassador said it would not be "the end of the world" if the deadline was missed.

The envoys' comments came as the Serbian province's ethnic Albanian leaders announced in London that Kosovo would unilaterally declare independence within days of the Dec. 10 deadline if the negotiators fail to reach a deal.

Independent Kosovo By December Says PM

Kosovo, Serbia (AHN) - Prime Minister Agim Ceku seeks autonomy for his region, saying Kosovo will unilaterally declare independence once an agreement between negotiators fails to materialize given the December 10 deadline.

"It has to happen. It has to happen very soon after the 10th of December," Ceku expressed. "We are talking about a couple of days, not weeks, not months," he added.
