NATO foreign ministers at a meeting in Brussels on Thursday said the situation in Kosovo is calm and under control at a very sensitive time.

NATO Secretary General Jaap De Hoop Scheffer noted that there had been no violence in Kosovo post-independence signalling the maturity of Kosovars.

In the absence of customs control at the border posts between Kosovo and Serbia, officials from UNMIK and Kosovo institutions have admitted that uncontrolled goods are entering Kosovo. UNMIK Pillar IV Spokesperson Mechthild Henneke is quoted as saying that there are goods that come from Serbia unchecked even though there are police officers there, adding that they are not customs officials. “Police and KFOR are not customs,” Henneke said.

Stockholm - Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt is to visit Kosovo this weekend just days after Sweden recognized the breakaway Serb province, the Swedish Foreign Ministry said Thursday. The visit Saturday makes Bildt one of the first ranking diplomats to visit there since it declared its independence February 17.
