Germany to send more troops to Kosovo Berlin - Germany said Friday it would move 400 extra soldiers to Kosovo in the next few days, but described it as a routine, month-long redeployment to replace withdrawing Italians. The German contingent total is to briefly rise to 2,700, exceeding that of Italy, currently the main peacekeeper nation in the Balkan state, which declared independence in February. EU - International Steering Group

Vienna - The European Union and several other countries formed on Thursday an International Steering Group (ICG) to supervise the independence of Kosovo declared by majority ethnic Albanians on 17 February.
