SKOPJE -- At least eight members of an armed Albanian group were killed Wednesday in a clash with Macedonian police.
The group was thought to be headed by Ramadan Shitij and Lirim Jakupi, a.k.a. Nazi, who escaped from Dubrava prison in Kosovo a few months ago.
The showdown took place in the villages of Brodec, Vesala and Vejce, near Tetovo, spokesman of the Macedonian Police Ivo Kotevski stated.
All police officers who took part in the operation escaped unharmed, it was also confirmed.
"The criminal group has been defeated," said Kotevski, adding that the police units are still in the increasingly volatile area, MIA news agency reported.
Five people were arrested, among them Habit Ahmeti, one of the leaders of the group Macedonia says is criminal. Heavy weapons and ammunition were also confiscated.

SKOPJE, Macedonia: Special police units in northwestern Macedonia chased a criminal gang headed by a prison fugitive from Kosovo, officials said Wednesday, and seven gang members were reportedly killed. The search operation was being conducted near the town of Tetovo, some 45 kilometers (31 miles) west of the capital, Skopje. "The police operation near the town of Tetovo, which was launched early on Wednesday, is ongoing. There was a shooting," a police official said under the customary condition of anonymity. "No casualties or injuries among the civilians and the police are reported, but there are casualties among the criminals we are chasing," the same source said. Private A1 television reported that seven of the gang members had been killed in a shootout with police. A police source could not immediately confirm the number of dead, and denied reports that a Macedonian police helicopter had crashed in the pursuit. |

The heads of the Macedonian and the Kosovar police forces agreed to work jointly "in order to step up the efficiency in curbing down the criminal groups who are seeking to take advantage of the political tensions ahead of resolving of the Kosovo's final status." At today's meeting in Skopje, the Director of the Office for Public Security with the Macedonian Interior Ministry, Ljupco Todorovski, and the Director of the Kosovo's Police, Gen. Sheremet Ameti, exchanged intelligence data on the movement and actions of these groups. "Coordinated action is the best way to curb down the criminal groups, who are taking advantage of the configuration of the borderline terrain for quick and frequent redeployment," the Police representatives concluded. UNMIK police commissioner Richard Monk and the police deputy crime commissioner Marc Miller also attended the meeting. Macedonian Police presented information on the recent murder of the Kosovo's citizen Xhavid Morina, who along with six other inmates escaped from the Dubrava prison last August. |

Belgrade, 23 Oct. (AKI) – Serbian prime minister Vojislav Kostunica on Tuesday warned visiting Italian foreign minister Massimo D’Alema against unilateral recognition of breakaway Kosovo province, saying it would jeopardise the stability and prosperity of the entire region. After meeting with D’Alema, Kostunica’s office said in a statement he called on Italy not to recognise the “illegal creation, if the Albanian separatists unilaterally proclaim independence” of the province which has been under United Nations control since 1999. |
